American Curriculum

The American Curriculum is one of the most popular curricula in the world today due to its practical application and ease of understanding. With the advent of the Common Core Standards, the American Curriculum has become one of the most sought after in the world due to its success in preparing students for college and career readiness. RISS has aligned its vision with such high standards in order to make sure that all students leave high school prepared for their future. The Common Core is informed by the highest, most effective standards from across the United States and countries around the world. The standards define the knowledge and skills students should gain throughout their K-12 education in order to graduate from high school prepared to succeed in entry-level careers, introductory academic college courses and workforce training programs.

The standards are:

  • Aligned with college and career expectations
  • Based on rigorous content and application of knowledge through higher-order thinking skills
  • Built upon the strengths and lessons of current state standards
  • Informed by other top performing countries in order to prepare all students for success in our global economy and society.

 

Elementary School Curriculum (grades 1 to 5)

Our academic curriculum was developed based on Common Core standards for each grade level and on UAE prescribed Ministry of Education (MOE) Curriculum. The curriculum scope and sequence is content-focused and adapted to meet the needs of each student at every grade level.

RISS is dedicated to providing a nurturing, skill based developmentally appropriate education based on students’ individual needs. The classroom team works together to develop and adapt instructional plans on a regular basis to meet the diverse learning styles of our students.

The curriculum is designed to help each student become a confident, successful leader and to help him or her integrate into RISS social community and the community at large.

Subjects taught in Elementary school are:

English, Math, Science, Arabic, Islamic, PE, Art, Social studies, ICT and Qura’an.

The curriculum focuses on student progress, independence, and building knowledge in each content area.

Middle School Curriculum (grades 6 to 8)

RISS Middle School’s academic and enrichment curriculum was developed based on Common Core standards for each grade level and on UAE prescribed Ministry of Education (MOE) Curriculum. The curriculum scope and sequence is adapted to meet the needs of each student at every grade level.

With a focus on developing the foundation necessary for effective functioning in high school and the larger community, our middle school division has created a program to foster skill development and greater independence.

Critical thinking and problem solving skill development are integral components of how the curriculum is executed. Hands-on projects and team building assignments are designed with the purpose of making studies relevant and connected to the world around them.

Additionally, students are encouraged to develop effective leadership and negotiating skills when working on long range projects with peers.

High School Curriculum (grades 9 to 12)

The High School curriculum builds upon prior skill and content learning from the elementary and middle grades. The High School curriculum at RISS is firmly rooted in the Common Core Standards and the College Readiness Standards. Expectations for academic achievement are high, and instructional approaches are differentiated for each student based on learning style, strengths, and areas of needed support.

To graduate from RISS, a student must complete a minimum of 21 academic credits in English, Sciences, Mathematics, Social studies, Physical Education and ICT. In addition, they must fulfill program requirements in Arabic and Islamic Studies.

To complete the credits, students at RISS should score at least 60% in each in the previously mentioned subjects.

In addition, they have to sit for standardized tests pertinent to core subjects.

A hallmark of our program is the early recognition, and consistent re-evaluation of student strengths and interests as a way of engaging students in high level curricular study. Students are challenged to pursue learning in creative ways, and to actively collaborate, communicate and cooperate with classmates and teachers.
